Aluminium Tilt and Turn Windows

Aluminium tilt & turn windows have a unique function that allows the window to be tilted inwards from the bottom hinges for ventilation without compromising on safety and security, to be opened inwardly, hinging from the side for fully accessible, maximum air flow, cleaning and emergency escape.

Design and aesthetic

  • Aluminium tilt-turn aluminium windows are made of thermally broken profiles as standard.
  • Constructed from usually slim profiles. For a standard-size window’s visible width (frame+vent) is between 70mm – 100mm. Large size tilt-turn windows are constructed with thicker profiles.
  • Aluminium tilt-turn windows can be constructed from visible butt hinges, or concealed friction stays which cost higher.
  • Aluminium tilt-turn windows usually come in different styles and appearance like standard, classic, steel-look, hidden vent.
  • Different colour and finish options for profiles: standard powder coated, textured metallic finishes, anodizing finished, etc.

Size Limitations

  • A standard single aluminium tilt-turn window sash measures up to 1000mm at width and 2000mm at height.
  • A large aluminium window sash measures up to 1.6m at width and 3 metres at height. The window sash may weigh up to 170kg.

Opening options

  • Tilt-turn (tilt before turn)
  • Turn-tilt (turn before tilt)
  • Tilt-only (bottom hung)
  • Turn-only (side-hung)
  • Tilt-turn double window

Safety & Security Options

  • Aluminium outward opening side-hung windows usully comes with standard multi-point locking systems.
  • Burglar resistance classes of RC2 or RC3 are also available as security options,
  • PAS24 security options are available for aluminium tilt-turn opening windows to be installed on ground floors of new buildings.
  • Restrictor can be used to limit the amount of opening of the side-hung windows for safety.

Glass Specification

  • Aluminium tilt-turn windows can be glazed with double or triple glass units.
  • Typical double glass option for aluminium tilt-turn windows: 28 mm (4/20/4 or 6/16/6), Toughened glass, Argon filled cavity, and Ug-value of 1.0 W/m2K.
  • Triple glass unit: To achieve better thermal performance (Ug-value of 0.5 or 0.6 W/m2K).
  • Toughened safety glass: Glass units are built with toughened glass
  • Laminated glass: One pane of glass unit can be built with laminated glass for additional security, safety or noise reduction.

Thermal Performance

  • Aluminium windows are usually constructed with thermally-broken frames to achieve higher thermal performance.
  • For existing residential buildings, aluminium windows must have either a Uw-value of 1.4 W/m2K or lower, or a WER Band B to comply with Part L of Building Regulations.
  • For new residential buildings, aluminium windows must have a notional Uw-value of 1.2 W/m2K (with limiting value of  1.6 W/m2K for SAP calculation) to comply with Part L of Building Regulations.
