Steel Tilt and Turn Windows


Having a unique dual opening mechanism, a tilt-turn window is a type of window that can be opened in two ways: tilt opening and turn opening. By tilting, the window can be opened inwards, allowing air to enter the building. By turning the window inwards on its vertical hinges, it provides full access and  offers easy cleaning.

When they are made of steel frames, tilt-turn windows offer slimmer sightlines and increased durability.

Design and Aesthetic


  • Thermally broken profiles as standard 
  • A basic depth for thermally broken steel windows is between 50-70mm.
  • Many brands offer steel tilt-turn windows with versatility in frame design in terms of sight lines, frame appearance, glazing beads etc.

Materials and Surface Finishes


  • Strip galvanised steel (Allowing full range of standard powder coated RAL colour options)
  • Corten
  • Stainless steel
  • Marine grade powder coated for for use in marine and coastal environments

Size Limitations


  • Standard sash sizes for steel tilt-turn window are up to 1 metre in width and 2.3 metres in height.
  • A tilt-turn window sash may weigh up to 150kg. 

Opening options


  • Tilt-turn (tilt before turn): By turning the handle 90°, the window sash opens in tilt mode for ventilation. Turning the handle 180° allows the windows sash to open in turn mode for full access. 
  • Turn-tilt (turn before tilt): Turning the handle 90° allows the windows sash functioning in turn mode. Turning the handle 180°operates the tilt function for ventilation.
  • Tilt-only (bottom hung): Window sash opens in tilt mode only for ventilation. This opening style is preferred when the window is used for ventilation only and full access is not required.  
  • Turn-only (side-hung): Visit the page of inward opening steel side-hung windows.
  • Tilt-turn double window: Master sash opens in tilt-turn modes and slave sash opens turn-only. There is no mullion in the middle when the both window are open.

Safety & Security Options


  • Steel tilt-turn windows come usually with standard multi-point locking systems.
  • Burglar resistance classes of RC2, RC3 or PAS24 are available as security options,
  • Restrictor can be used to limit the amount of opening of the tilt-turn windows for safety.

Glass Options


  • Double glass option for a standard size tilt-turn window: 4-20-4, toughened glass, 20mm argon filled cavity, Ug-value of 1.0 W/m2K, low-e coating, warm edge spacers, light transmission over 70%) 
  • Triple glass option to achieve better thermal performance.
  • One pane of glass unit can be built with laminated glass for additional security or safety for preventing fall through, overhead glazing and full height glazing.

Thermal Performance


  • Thermal performance of a steel tilt-turn window depends on its frame and glass combinations.
  • A typical steel window can achieve a U-value less than 1.4 W/m2K with double glass (Ug=1.0).
  • For better U-values, triple glass must be choosen.

Weather-tightness Performance


A typical steel tilt-turn window should meet the following minimum weather-tightness performance values:

  • Air tightness: Class 4 (600 Pa)
  • Water tightness Class 9A (900 Pa)
  • Wind load resistance: Class C4 (1600 Pa)

Regulations and Standards


A steel window to be installed at your property is subject to building regulations and certain standards:
